Sord has been a dragonkeeper since he was only six years old. He has been with his dragon, Rafon, all this time and has never been apart from him for more than a day. Now, he must venture into the city to find Rafon's son Gerri.

Kell has never known the love of family or the warmth of a home. When he inadvertently calls Gerri to him in the city, he knows he has found his place in the world but Gerri is in danger. When he meets Sord, he realizes his life has been changed forever.

Sord, Kell and Gerri hide in the catacombs and wait to make their move and leave the city. When Velen stumbles upon them, he is immediately taken prisoner. He gets a good look at Sord and wants him instantly, but his only chance is with the boy, Kell. He agrees to help them flee the city if they will take him with them. Once they arrive in the Riokonnan hills they are greeted by Rafon and Velen is taken to the council. Will Sord and Kell find love besides from their dragons and will Velen be allowed to stay or will he be cast out or worse?

In all honesty, I did not think I would like this story. Boy, was I ever wrong. The dragons are unique from other dragon stories. Yes, they are fierce but they are loyal and they care deeply for their keepers. Mr. Shade has brought this world to life with his vivid descriptions of color and texture, but most of all, with love, friendship and family. This is a read that any fantasy lover should be clamoring to get their hands on.
