Melissa is a doctor who is maybe a little too dedicated to the people of her small town practice. A childhood of being shuffled around between foster homes makes her want a home and family of her own.
James has a busy career in Nashville as an ER doctor and teacher at Vanderbilt University, in addition to his research. He has long felt that he is coming a distant second in Melissa’s life and is determined to do something about it.
Melissa and James have strong feelings for each other but very different goals. Melissa longs for a home and family and James does not want children at all, and resents Melissa’s dedication to her patients. Melissa’s unexpected pregnancy may be the shakeup they need, or may break them up completely.
Overall, I liked this story even though I had a really hard time warming up to James. He seems like a spoiled brat determined to get his own way for the better part of the story. They make a big deal of the death of his baby sister from SIDS; a brilliant and successful doctor should not have such difficulties. He makes no allowances for Melissa’s needs and really does not understand until he actually does her job for a while. Melissa is a workaholic, but so is James and I do not understand why an hour commute is a big deal. In this day and age that is pretty average, especially in a metropolitan area. I did like the way they finally handled their problems though and the two definitely do love each other even though they are too stubborn to tell each other, making for a satisfying ending to a mostly enjoyable story.
