Ashlyn Darrow has been troubled by voices since she was a small child. Her parents left her in an Institute for research. After overhearing about men with supernatural abilities, Ashlyn does her own research never expecting the dangerous odds.

Maddox lives with a curse. Trapped with the demon, Violence, that is part of his lungs and heart, the two are woven together. He will do anything to break free of the curse but falling in love with a woman as beautiful as Ashlyn could prove dangerous.

Ashlyn is tired of the voices that fill her head. No matter where she stands, she hears the conversations. Instead of returning to the United States, she stays in Budapest after hearing about certain men with unexplainable abilities. The Lords of the Underworld carry an eternal curse, not only magical, but seductive. If she can locate these men she hopes to cure her tormenting ability. After mentioning to Dr. McIntosh, the Vice President of the Institute, about the men, he believes them to be demons and refuses to take Ashlyn to find them. She begins her own research. After meeting Maddox, she discovers he lives in his own tormented stages. Maddox wishes to be free of the powerful curse where he cannot even guarantee his friends’ safety. Ashlyn needs his help but he knows it is dangerous to be around her. She strikes a match to his heart. Ashlyn will do anything to break the curse, even giving her life for the man she has grown to love.

Gena Showalter has written a book that keeps the reader spellbound. The characters are more than captivating. The world where Maddox lives keeps the reader on their toes as the suffering he emits can be felt throughout this story, as well as those of Ashlyn’s. Both are tormented, yet drawn together as each grips the reader even more. It is like a dark underworld and the reader gets pulled right along into Ashlyn’s research. The plot is remarkable, not to mention twist and turns I never expected. The Darkest Night is on the edge entertainment. Even the sensual scenes between Maddox and Ashlyn are written in a tasteful way in this mesmerizing read. I can hardly wait for the next in the series.
