Lady Morgana of Carman’s father has just arranged a marriage for her, but the sexually independent Morgana has no intention of going quietly into the night. Sure that the Duke of Bismalle is up to something dastardly, Morgana will do whatever it takes to expose him. This includes enlisting the help of one of her father’s knights.
Sir Beauregard has volunteered to protect Lady Morgana while she remains sequestered in her room. The problem is that Morgana disappears from her room each night and does not return until morning, which has caused two other knights to be demoted. Since he has every intention of being promoted to the Secret Service, he has no intention of allowing the same thing to happen to him, despite his erotic fantasies about the lovely Morgana.
When Morgana disappears from her room on his first night, returning the next morning, Beauregard finds himself in the untenable position of either going along with Morgana’s schemes or finding himself demoted. Finally agreeing to help her, not only by unmasking her soon-to-be husband but also by taking care of her sexual needs, neither bargains on falling in love. But can they be together? Or will those scheming for the demise of the Princesses of Carman win?
The Satin Slippers is a wonderful modern fairytale come to life. Morgana is a modern woman living in a world ruled by antiquated laws, and I enjoyed her feistiness. Sir Beauregard is an old-fashioned chivalrous man, and watching him deal with Morgana is fun since she never does what he tells her to. The world-building is well-crafted, though I would have liked more clues as to the time period. If you enjoy fairytales with an erotic twist, then you need to read The Satin Slippers.
