Simon Shaw is a professor of history with a best selling book. He is in between relationships having just broken up with his girlfriend, Julie. With Christmas approaching, his single state bothers him more than usual.
Helen Williams in most ways is a perfectly normal woman. She is even contemplating marriage, but one thing is holding her back. She dreams of a past life as a woman named Annie.
When a woman comes to Simon Shaw seeking help in finding out if her dreams are just elaborate fantasies or actual memories of a past life, he is sure that she is mentally ill. Later, certain events and actual historical incidents make him reconsider her tale, and then the murders definitely catch his interest.
This mystery is a little slow to start but I soon got very involved in the story. Helen is a great character, she does not want her dreams to be real, but feels the need to find out for sure before she agrees to marry her long term boyfriend. Simon is a bit at loose ends. He is alone for the holidays and the semester is just ending, just the right time for an intriguing mystery brought to him by an attractive woman. The mystery is more difficult than it appears at first. The Orphanage holds a lot of secrets and this one is a doozy. I enjoyed the characters and the academic setting and the mystery itself. The author gives you all you need but does not make the solution easy, the best kind of mystery story. This one is a kind of two for one deal also with both a modern and historic mystery to solve even though the two are closely intertwined.
