Kate is tired of playing life safely. It has not changed her life-long bad luck streak. She quits her job, and her boyfriend, and heads down to New Orleans to Tulane Law. She makes new friends, but is not really happy, except with her part-time job.
Nick is the typical first-year law student playboy. He has feelings for Kate, but she has a boyfriend. Hopefully some day she will break up with him, but in the meantime he is her best friend and there are just so many women in New Orleans.
An almost thirty-year old woman decides to shake up her life and go to law school. Life in the Big Easy is very different from small town Ithaca, but she needs to get away from the boring safety of her life. She has two men in her life, but really needs to find herself first.
Kate is a very sympathetic character. She has not had it easy and seems to be living under a black cloud of bad luck. She really has to stop drifting and take charge of her own life. Graham, the boyfriend, is pretty but incredibly selfish and boring. Nick is warm and sexy, but a male slut. Jen and Lexi are self-centered, and even though they are the same age as Kate, they really need to grow up. Both want to be good friends to Kate, but I really do not think that they are capable of it at this time in their lives. Addison is quirky and likable, but makes bad judgment calls. Professor Hoffman is an amalgam of all the bad professors that I have ever had. I felt sorry for Dana and think that her breakdown is the best thing that could have happened to her. My favorite character is Armstrong. He drinks too much and is about as colorful as his hometown, but is a very good friend to Kate, giving her nothing but good advice. This is a really great story that I read in one sitting.
