Historical Romance (with paranormal elements)
Rating: 4 Cups
Lady Hermione Marlowe is a young woman in her third season. She is in love with her brother’s friend Lord Rockhurst, but he does not know that she exists. She hopes her signature color, capucine, will attract his attention, but her only suitor is a very boring young peer.
Thomas, Lord Rockhurst is also Paratus, a guardian of London. He and his wolfhound Rowan protect the city of London from denizens of the underworld. The people of the Ton think that he is a degenerate but very eligible rake.
The Paratus has the very dangerous job of protecting London and sealing doors to the underworld so that dergas and other monsters cannot enter. He is also the Earl of Rockhurst and a very eligible bachelor. Hermione is in love with him but cannot get his attention, until she literally becomes invisible and follows him to Seven Dials and sees him in action.
This is an interesting twist on the usual historical romance. The heroine is a member of a notoriously eccentric family and is determined to make herself stand out. She chooses an unflattering shade of orange as her signature color and still fades into the background. She is virtually invisible until she finds her new sister-in-law’s ring on the floor and slips it on for safety. In her wish to know all of Rockhurst’s secrets, she invisibly follows him, which has unforeseen consequences, but ironically, being invisible gets her noticed. The two have some wild adventures and even wilder scenes in the bedroom. I am stuck with the image of him making love to the invisible woman. This book is a cut about the usual. It is inventive, passionate and funny in turns, and I loved it.
