For one very short period in her life MaryEmma Gold was happy, and then the bottom fell out of her world. First from her stepfather and then her brother-in-law, she became intimately acquainted with the pain dealt from a man’s hand.

The love and respect of his daughter Nicole is all Jordan Shasta lives for. His wife walked out on them a year ago and never looked back, so it has been up to him to create a loving, stable environment for his little girl.

The pain is so deep and constant it enshrouds MaryEmma like a heavy cloak. She can barely remember a time when just the sound of a man’s voice did not send chills of fear racing down her spine. The only male she has ever loved besides her real father was just a boy when they knew each other, but Jordan left a lasting impression. Between him and the rock garden she knew as a kid, she is able to cling to the tiniest thread of hope that someday she may actually have a real family.

For me this has to be one of the hardest books I have ever had to review. There are so many conflicting emotions, and while the writing is certainly not the issue, as it is an excellent piece of work, my confusion arises with the characters. They frustrated me so badly, I actually had to walk away, calm down, and return to finish reading this later. I cannot give away any details, but suffice it to say that people who believe themselves to be righteous and above the law are every bit as corrupt as the people they claim to hate. This book made my blood boil and my heart ache, but it also made me eternally grateful for all of the great men in my life, and for that I say thank you to both of these fantastic authors.
