Jack Vaughn, a former New York City police officer, now spends his time in sunny Miami Beach, as a personal trainer. He enjoys an easy laid-back life, often finding time for some casual fishing, until trouble comes knocking at his door. Jack left the police force after an accident involving him accidentally shooting a fellow cop. He finds living in Miami has some perks. A person can lay low, and enjoy life, often grabbing some extra income along the way.
Andrew Patterson is a retired Colonel. He had been a Green Beret who served in Vietnam while the other time, as a military scientist working on top-secret experiments for the government. He later started his own company with Pellucid Labs, a biotech company that made him a fortune.
The Colonel had been a good friend and wealthy client every since Jack decided to date Vivian, his daughter, who Jack had given free personal training. Jack soon learned how it felt to have a broken heart when he and Vivian had a parting of the ways. It appeared Randy Matson; a pornographer had more to offer Vivian than Jack, which is why the Colonel needs Jack’s help. The Colonel will pay Jack one hundred thousand dollars if Jack will sink a yacht containing Randy’s body. He knows he can’t buy Jack, but is willing to rent him out if he will help. It appears Randy used Vivian in some tapes then blackmailed her. The Colonel could not afford any of the sex tapes to reach his friends in Washington, so he took matters into his own hands. Jack is surprised with the events and is hesitant at first about making the deal, then agrees. In no time, Jack discovers not only blackmail, sex tapes and murder, but some things that do not appear as they seem, that just might set Jack up for a fall, he never imagined if he cannot get to the truth.
I must say once I started reading Straits of Fortune, I was hooked. I loved the way Jack carries the reader into the story as if walking straight into the drama of events. It reminded me of those black and white detective shows, where the laid-back detective is cool, sophisticated and charming. I found Jack all those qualities and more. Anthony Gagliano creates a great plot, with intelligent dialogue and great visualization that leads to a thrilling read, holding like a magnet until the last page. He adds intrigue, a colorful cast of characters, beginning with the Colonel, and Vivian to season a read that is first class. This is one story that should not escape any reader. It is loaded with everything to grab the reader making it a most recommended and extraordinary read that truly holds tight even after the dramatic conclusion.
