Denver cop Mike Lawson knows about hardships. He has been through hell since his wife’s illness and death, not to mention being suspended from his job for losing his gun. As a cop, Mike knows booze and cars don't mix. One thing he would love to forget is the past, a past that even keeps him at bay with his dad. The lieutenant has given him time to get his head straight. With his leave from the police force he is to keep a vigil watch over Cassie as she starts in on a sensitive case with deciphering an encrypted disk.

Cassie Allen is a PPS tech whiz that must decode a mysterious computer disk. The task is a bit risky so she needs a bodyguard. There are two drawbacks besides being in the line of fire, her attraction toward Mike and the loss of her hearing.

Thoughts of Mike have never left Cassie, as his scent and touch intoxicates her. She sets out to show that being deaf does not stop anyone from tackling any situation. She never imagined that just deciphering a code would put her life in jeopardy as a dark figure begins to threaten and Mike does not wish to lose another person that he loves. This is one case he will not allow to be part of a history he wishes to bury forever while trying to break the barrier even with his dad. It is only a matter of time as danger quickly surrounds Cassie.

Refreshing characters, gung-ho actions and a strong connection that lingers can be found in Special Assignment. The intriguing secondary characters blend in well making this an even greater book read. The soothing romance and passion simmers between Cassie and Mike and this reader eagerly anticipated their time together. I love the independency of Cassie, and how she does not allow her hearing loss to interfere in what she sets out to do in life. Mike’s frustrations as being an honest cop only to have some believe he is dishonest shows deep emotions that touch the reader. He has such a charismatic charm that grabs the reader and does not let go. Ann Voss Peterson instills a story where this reader feels the intensity of the stalker, of the gunfire, not to mention the connection with Mike and Cassie. She sketches characters with troubles, and does not allow any handicap to stand in their way. She creates a bodyguard that percolate with sex appeal while having a heart of gold in this enjoyable read.
