| SOUL MATTERS YOLANDA TONETTE SANDERS ISBN#0-446-69441-X September 2005 Warner Faith - Time Warner Book Group 1271 Avenue of the Americas, New York, NY 10020 Paperback $13.95 U.S./$18.95 Can 362 Pages Christian/ Young Women/ Fiction Rating: Wendy Phillips is a first grade teacher who is seven weeks pregnant with her first child. When her doctor informs her that she has Chlamydia, she immediately blames her husband of six months of cheating on her and throws him out. Having been raised in a Christian home, she keeps this revelation to herself and it eats at her self-confidence. In a fit of desperation and fearing the stigma of being a single parent, she schedules an abortion in a bordering town. When it comes time to go through with the procedure, she backs out and asks for another appointment later that same day. Reflecting on her options at a diner, she runs into her pastor and bursts into tears. What will Wendy decide? Kevin Phillips is married to Wendy and is CEO of his own real estate company. Although he lives the life of a millionaire, he still likes to go clubbing with his boys. He knows his behavior gets on his wife’s nerves, but he figures he is entitled to his fun. When his wife accuses him of giving her a sexually transmitted disease, he immediately questions the one woman he had been having sex with before he got involved with his wife. His former friend-with-benefits confirms the fact that she unknowingly gave him the STD and offers to verify that fact with his wife. Since Wendy refuses to speak with him, he writes her a letter, detailing how he got the STD and confesses his love and faithfulness to their marriage. Unbeknownst to him, Wendy stuffs the letter, unread, in the back of a drawer and forgets about it. Will he ever be able to restore their relationship? Both Wendy and Kevin try to go on as single people, all the while, still hurting and missing each other. When Kevin starts a friendship with a woman he meets at a club and Wendy finds out, she hits the roof. In retaliation, Wendy’s friend encourages her to explore the possibility of renewing a relationship with her ex-boyfriend. Why would her friend encourage her when she knows her heart still belongs to her husband? Ms. Yolanda Tonette Sanders has written an excellent book with characters easy to identify with. I felt all the range of emotions the heroine felt and it touched me from the first paragraph. The hero, in his way, grabs your heart after you discover his predicament. The minor characters with their own subplots enrich the story and round out the books sense of family. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Katherine L.
