Jane Madison is librarian and budding witch but neither of those abilities can help her with her crazy life. Her job is getting more and more crazy, there are bumps in the road with her very best friend, and on top of it all, the local coven has summoned her to meet with them in order for them to test her powers as a witch.
David Montrose is Jane’s Warder, the person in charge of making sure a witch is safe and knows what she needs to know. However, he doesn’t believe Jane is living up to her potential. Also, there are plots brewing that he’s forbidden to let her know about.
Jane is given the task of setting the Centerstone for the Coven’s new Safehold. However, someone is determined to see her fail. Both Jane and David know how high the price would be if Jane does not pass this test. Distractions of all kinds as well as Jane’s own doubt are working against them. Will David be able to help Jane tap her true potential?
I loved this book! Jane’s reactions to not only having to deal with the sudden onset of her magical powers, but then having to prove them was spot on. Most of us have had to deal with the feeling of being an outsider and not quite fitting in, but wanting to so badly we are willing to compromise a piece of ourselves to do it. Jane’s journey is very empowering. Ms. Klasky’s descriptions of spell casting and magic are written in a clear vivid way. The way her descriptions pull you in makes you feel as if you are part of the spell your self. I am definitely getting the first book in this series and eagerly awaiting the third.
