Catherine Brell has traveled with her fiancé, Bahru Karim, to a place called Diabolusia. This is where Bahru will be taking on a new job as preparer of the dead. She is very uncertain of this arrangement made by her family because Bahru seems more interested in pleasing himself than having anything to do with her.

Prince Khenty Ben-Alkazar holds the current job of being a companion to the dead, that is, helping them on to the afterlife. He is carrying on the tradition of his family. That is, until he meets Catherine and his thoughts of her become all consuming.

Khenty and Catherine begin to have feelings for each other, but there are problems that stand in the way that they must conquer before being together at all. Bahru, the fiancé, and a jealous housekeeper named Nyria are just two of the problems standing in their way.

I must say that I had a very hard time starting this story. I was a bit confused at first, but after the second chapter, I was pleasantly surprised that the storyline picked up, and I found a treasure in the middle of the story. Although I had a hard time at the beginning, it in no way means that you will. Try Shades of the Wind for a change of pace.
