Historical Romance
Rating: 4 Cups

Daphne has been caring for her younger brother and sister all of their lives. The daughter of a military man, and a woman in delicate health, she is self-sufficient. Her hopes of marriage died with a young lieutenant in India.

Charles is finally free of his evil half-brother and stepmother, but has an uneasy feeling that his brother is not really dead, especially when the bodies of young women start appearing again.

When Daphne’s young brother inherits an estate from a previously unknown relative, the three siblings are thrilled not to be living in genteel poverty any longer. The estate is much larger than expected and comes complete with ghosts. Charles Weston is searching for a ghost of quite a different kind.

This novel combines the best elements of historical romance and romantic suspense. The setting and era is described beautifully and the characters fit into their time period perfectly. There is also a vicious serial killer on the loose who is evil enough to fit into any modern thriller. Charles and Daphne are both strong characters who are forced by circumstance to marry and unexpectedly fall in love with each other. The ghostly presences add some interest to the plot and help out at times. The old house is a character in itself with secrets that the ghosts lead Charles and Daphne to. The other characters are well drawn, some returning from a previous story. The author builds the suspense with Charles and Daphne’s trip to the late half-brother’s homes and home again to a very chilling and exciting conclusion.
