Lady Gelis MacKenzie is a smart and bold woman who is ready to marry. Her father, Duncan MacKenzie-–chieftain of the MacKenzie clan--is the one who is turning suitors away. The latest request for Gelis' hand comes from a person to which Duncan owes his life and because of his honor, Duncan cannot refuse.
Ronan MacRuari--the Raven--lives with a curse that has haunted his family for generations. Burying two wives, he vows to never marry again, but his grandfather, Valdar, has other plans for Ronan and Castle Dare. Valdar believes this woman will bring the light and warmth back to his clan and home.
While walking on the beach, Gelis has a vision of the man she will one day marry. The vision comes in the form of a raven. When she returns to her family castle, she learns of a request for her hand and the man she is to marry is known as the Raven. Ronan is on a quest for the stone which will break the curse placed on his family years ago and marrying Gelis does not fit in with that plan. Gelis is not to be deterred. She integrates herself into Ronan's life and quest quickly, but not so quietly.
This is a lovely story set in the Scottish Highlands. The descriptions of the country and the people are vivid and breathtaking. This tale includes adventure, love and magic, all of the elements for a terrific Scottish romance. I enjoy Gelis' stubbornness, determination, and brazenness. The bond she and her father share is one which is familiar to me. Ronan is the very image of a Scottsman--handsome, rugged, strong and extremely set in his ways. Ms. Welfonder creates an enchanting story which touched the depths of my being.
