Cassandra, Lady Paget, is finally free from her nightmare of a marriage. She spent nine years as Lord Paget’s wife; victim of his drunken rages, until his accidental death. Even now she is not completely free. Her stepson has deprived her of her inheritance, threatening to accuse her of her husband’s murder.

Stephen Huxtable is the Earl of Merton. He is a loving brother to his three sisters and very handsome, wealthy, and likeable. He is not looking to marry yet, but when he does, it will be to a young debutante.

Cassandra is nearly destitute due to the cruelty of her stepson and the neglect of her brother. She is determined never to depend on anyone again and travels to London with her friends to barter the only thing she has of value, her body. Lord Merton and his cousin have caught her eye, but love is not what she is looking for.

As usual, Ms. Balogh has given us some very memorable characters and a heroine in an untenable situation not of her own making. Cassandra is a brave woman and a survivor, as are her friends. Stephen has a kind heart and empathy, as well as angelic good looks and a very strong personality. The author captures the people and the era very well and Cassandra and Stephen’s story will grab hold of you and not let you go until the last page.
