Madeline is one of the most sought after women in London Society. As Lady Redcomb, she is every man’s dream and unattainable. Madeline is also a witch and one of Les Chassettes who work for a Council for the good of England. Her powers have not yet been fully realized, but she is not as strong as her sister.

Jasper Reeves is now Lord Gallo, but he was once a starving orphan in Newgate. Rescued by the head of the Council, Les Chassettes are his responsibility to watch over. Madeline holds a special place in his heart.

Young and beautiful girls of the lower classes have been disappearing in London. When the man who makes Madeline’s dancing slippers asks for her help in finding his daughter, she cannot say no, though her friend and superior Jasper forbids it. Rather than refuse to help a man in need, she leaves the security of Lavender House and her fellow witches and starts her own investigation.

This story is both an excellent mystery and historical romance, and the paranormal elements are masterfully done. I was on the edge of my seat throughout the story and the plot is fast moving and suspenseful. The romantic tension between Madeline and Jasper is always present and grows by leaps and bounds once she moves out. Madeline is a great character. She always was in the shadow of her more powerful sister, but seems to be a late bloomer whose powers are still growing. The other characters are well drawn, and some of them are a bit eccentric and colorful, which adds to the fun. This one is going onto my keeper shelf.
