Sapphire Dreams- Released in Tales from the Treasure Trove IV

Kate O’Malley’s mother, Grace, opened the Sapphire Palace, a saloon, restaurant, and boarding house in one convenient location. Kate inherited Sapphire Palace when her mother fell in love and moved to Texas. All in all, Kate enjoys her job. That is, until the new marshal begins to suspect her of illegal activities.

When James Freeman was a boy, his mother was forced to prostitute herself in order to provide for the two of them. When his mother died of syphilis, he vowed to keep this from happening to other women. As Marshall of Bozeman, Montana, he now has the power to keep his promise.

Kate has so much spirit and fire, while James acts like the gasoline. Kate is a terrific depiction of what I have always imagined single women in the 1880s to be.

Jane and the Judge

Jane Miller has known only abuse and intimidation in her life. After her husband dies, she turns to prostitution in order to earn a living. This lands Jane in Judge Hopkins’ courtroom, where she gets thirty days in jail before her luck changes.

Judge Simon Hopkins is the circuit judge. He is a strongly committed bachelor because of his job and the dangers that come with it. Jane Miller might be the one to make him change his mind.

Jane has never known the gentleness a man’s hand can hold. Simon can be a bit daunting at the best of times, and even more so because of his job. Once again, two very different people find love.

These stories have been released before in a series of anthologies, but this is the first time you can find them all together in one book. I really enjoyed the look inside the lives of these people. I liked the way each story was tied into the next. I got to know the characters and see how their lives changed as the tales went on. Ms. Pirri sets this book in such a beautiful piece of the country. If you close your eyes, you can picture Kate and James, Annie and Cane, Jane and Simon all standing on the porch of the Sapphire Palace, asking you to come back for another visit soon.
