Emma McGovern was a lonely woman living with her father and servant in a house owned by her family for generations. She has never known the touch of a man, she has never known love. Emma can never know true love because of a curse put on her family by a gypsy girl a long time ago.

Damien Hancock is a demon hunter and a member of the Cadre, a society of people whose purpose is to protect humans for evil beings. Unfortunately for Damien in some people’s eyes he is one of the evil beings himself. Damien is a vampire. He is sent to Emma McGovern by the Cadre to help protect her from the curse plaguing her family.

The McGovern curse says that once a McGovern falls in love a revenge demon Asmos will consume them. The curse was started by a gypsy girl who was spurned in love by a man she thought loved her. She wanted revenge and called upon the demon Asmos to help her punish the people that humiliated her. Damien and Emma have to work together in hopes of breaking the curse. But can they break the curse before it pulls them both into it and consumes them?

Rising Darkness is a nice story. I generally liked the over all theme of this book. Emma and Damien were great characters and they were both a wonderful mix of despair, hope, and love. The story is a nice blend of love, mystery and action. It had a couple of points that dragged on a little and bogged the reader down, which is why I gave it a 3 cup rating. But when the story got really moving it made it a worth while read.
