Brodie Farrell is a professional finder with a police detective as a lover. She is brilliant at research but not as good at personal relationships other than with her daughter Paddy. She is stunning and though men are drawn to her she is unaware of the fact. Daniel is brilliant and sensitive where Deacon seems to be a bit rough around the edges.
Allison Barker was once a successful competitive rider. In conjunction with her father's horse dealing business she competed all over Europe and was a contender for the Olympic team. All this ended with her father's death and the near failure of the business.
A new drug has killed two teenagers in Dimmock. Allison Barker is convinced that her father was murdered and that the murderer is after her also. She turns up in the hospital with an overdose of the new drug called Scram. Her friend Daniel feels responsible since he hit her with Brodie's car; they are both involved in the case.
While I never really warmed up to any of the characters the mystery of the new drug and how it was getting from Germany to England was intriguing. In addition, the murder of Stanley Barker raised a lot of questions. This mystery is well written and difficult to solve however, towards the end I realized that the necessary clues were there. I feel cheated if the characters are privy to information that is not shared with the reader and Ms. Bannister definitely did not cheat me. The only downside was that I could not fathom Brodie's appeal to the male populace or her relationships to Deacon or Daniel. Brodie is self-centered and unaware of the people around her, unusual for someone who solves problems. Overall, this is a well-written and challenging mystery with an interesting and unusual premise.
