Nevare Burvelle is a soldier, brave and true to the service of the King of Gernia. He has been falsely accused of crimes. Even though he triumphed over a magic in which he was held captive, now he must turn to its help since becoming a fugitive and outcast.

Lisana is a Speck woman and enemy to Nevare. When he comes to her asking for help, there may be some steep consequences involved for peace to be obtained.

Nevare never spoke at his court martial. The memories of the trial still haze his mind. False evidence was planted, implicating Nevare, framing him for crimes. Fortunately, Nevare found a way of escaping the town of Gettys, and all the brother soldiers who sought his capture. Instead of helping, they sentenced him to a death. He becomes an outsider with no one for the exception of the magic of the Specks, a magic he has been cursed. Though his body feels corrupt and maimed, he senses it is much better than facing death. Believing he has failed, Nevare gives himself over to the magic but not with some attached strings, one being Lisana, who tells him the magic, has chosen him. The Speck have an overpowering alter personality, and with the help of Nevare, will use him to fight those that meant him harm but Nevare has high hopes for peace.

Renegade’s Magic is the conclusion in the Soldier Son Trilogy and it has been a huge adventurous ride. The characters boldly take shape within the pages and transport the readers to new heights with each volume. Whenever I thought Nevare was at the end of his journey, something always arose making him work harder to get out of the rut he was placed. This volume showed more of his sincere colors, his genuine qualities that tread upon the readers heart. I felt his sadness when he believes he is on his last leg and has failed everyone. Robin Hobb spins a fascinating fantasy that depicts much imagination in this grand tale. The reader cannot help but feel the many disappointments, hardships, challenges and promising hope she portrays in all her characters in this stirring read.
