Widow Kerri Nelson lives with her nine-year-old son Thomas. A devote mother, the moment she hears explosions ripple through the air, her first instinct is of Tom’s whereabouts. When she finds him, she fears the construction site owners might hold him responsible for any fire. She makes sure he is not charged.
Wade Sorenson has not seen Kerri for almost three years since the funeral. He loved the redhead, from a far, but his best friend, John, was the one that beat him to proposing. When the construction site of Pine Ridge Estates, his dream, happens to set a blaze, he goes looking for the source that leads him directly to Kerri’s door and a reunion long overdue.
Tom was not supposed to be at the site. When others believe that, he may have seen who caused the ordeal puts his life is in jeopardy.
Kerri cannot believe that the man who shattered their lives is knocking at her door asking questions about the explosion. Because of Wade, she lost her husband and the grudge against him is still strong. Tom does not care; he is happy to see him again. Wade is certain that Tom knows something about the fire that he is not willing to confess and if Kerri would allow him to question the boy, he would have answers. Kerri and Wade go head to head with each other with not only the fire accident but also the past. There is more that Kerri did not know about John, and Wade feels if he could only express the truth, she would understand. Wade is accountable for one thing, loving the redhead but not going after her before John. After Tom’s life is threatened, there is only one thing left to do and Kerri decides to flee with him and protect her son at any cost. Wade has something else in mind. He plans to safeguard them, while finding a way to ease Kerri back into his life. Perhaps after they find out who is behind the explosion, they can become one happy family, but first they have to make sure there is no more threat of danger to anyone.
Reluctant Witness is an exhilarating drama that spins immediately. I could feel the worry that Kerri felt over not being able to locate Tom. And when Wade sensed that Tom was in harms way, the adrenalin rush was rampant. These two characters emitted so much emotion it was hard to believe this was not a real life event happening especially when the mishaps surrounded Thomas. Wade’s love for Kerri and Thomas really shines in this read. MS. Long weaves intrigue that engages the reader and touches the heart in many ways. Using Tom as collateral damage blended great depth to the storyline. She pens a well-written story with a great plot that keeps on ticking until the final page in this extraordinary read that really delivers.
