Handsome cowboy Mark Mitchell needs only a cold beer and a hot shower to make him happy after a long day of driving. Exhausted, he stops off at a motel and gets the last available room then heads off in search of refreshment. A well-stacked blond catches his eye and soon he is caught up in her plot to gain her inheritance. She needs a cowboy and he fits the bill perfectly.
Kathryn decides Mark is perfect to play the part of ‘husband’ for a few days. She needs to trick her mother into handing over the money her father left her, which she can only get if she is married by the age of 30. When he offers her the spare bed in his room for the night, Kathryn has opportunity to see his assets close up and time to convince him to assist her.
Kathryn hauls Mark off to her mother's house. While they are there, they find their attraction morphing into passion. But Mark is only there to do a beautiful stranger a favor and will leave when the money is in Kathryn’s pocket. Now, Kathryn finds she needs her hot cowboy for more than a few days. She wants to keep him.
Playing House has the potential to be a better story than it is. My biggest problem was that, although the hero was likeable enough, I did not really like the heroine. She was deliberately deceiving her apparently caring mother into giving her money by lying about a marriage, then bringing a stranger she picks up at a bar into her mother’s home. She blatantly insults the hero when she first meets him, but then decides she’s in love with him two days later. She acts like an impulsive brat instead of a mature, 30 year old woman throughout. The story had a workable plotline, but the writing wasn’t polished enough to make me recommend purchasing the title.
