M/M Contemporary Erotic Romance
Rating: 4 Cups
Adam Hyland was once a classical dancer until he messed up his knee, and now he is living out of his car and stripping just to survive. He recently broke up with his lover when he caught him in their bed with another man.
Jimmy Trent is a gay wealthy older man. He occasionally gets together with his best friend, who just happens to be a friend with benefits, and the occasional one night stand, but for the most part he is alone. Terrified of what will happen if his family and business associates find out he is gay, he is definitely in the closet.
When Jimmy’s co-worker arranges for a male stripper for his birthday and he gets his first look at Adam, Jimmy thinks he has died and gone to heaven. When he and Adam actually have sex, he is sure of it. Even with this first incident the two clearly feel something for each other, but neither really thinks that anything will come of it. Then Adam gets a job stripping at Fleshtones, which turns out to belong to Jimmy and his brother. When Adam discovers Jimmy is his boss, he is less than enthused because in his mind this means there is no hope for them, no matter how much he might wish otherwise. However, life has a way of taking interesting turns, and when Adam hurts his knee and Jimmy discovers he has been sleeping in his car, he ends up taking Adam home. While the love is clearly there between them, Jimmy does not want their relationship to be public knowledge and that hurts Adam. Just as they begin to work things out, Jimmy keeps something from Adam and it is the last straw. Will Adam walk away for good, or give Jimmy another chance?
Phoenix Rising is a positively heart wrenching love story. There are places that make your gut clench. I admit there were parts that were so emotional I had tears in my eyes, and I had to actually stop reading for a bit and then come back to it. Ms. Gardner is a master storyteller who has the ability to actually make the reader feel the emotions the characters are going through. It is never just sex with these two and she makes that abundantly clear from the beginning. The sex, when it does happen, is blistering hot and deeply emotional which is my favorite kind of romance read. This is one book you do not want to miss, and should grace every romance reader’s library.
