Leslie Anne Coxwell is a wife, mother and university history professor. To say she performs all of these duties with flair is an understatement. Dealing with an attorney for a husband, a thirteen-year-old daughter with plenty of attitude, college age students and a department head with ulterior motives, leaves her little time to herself. Her secret indulgence of wearing sexy lingerie under her staid garments, keeps her sanity in tact. Trying to emotionally support her husband is difficult and having had no intimate contact with him for at least three months makes her antsy. She knows he can do outstanding work with just a little push from her and she expects the best from him. Then her husband loses an important trial, his father commits suicide and he ups and leaves for New Orleans.

Matt Coxwell has always tried to live up to his father’s expectations and has always failed. Being compared to his big brother James leaves him aimless until he chooses to stand up for justice in a trial his father expects him to win against his brother. Knowing his father’s disappointment in him, he knows he will be summoned. When he arrives, it is his father’s dead; still warm body that greets him. Grief stricken and drinking, he knows his wife is expecting an explanation and decides it is not worth discussing. Ever since 9-11, he has been thinking it is time to pursue a passion and knowing that Leslie would just talk him out of it, he leaves. It is time to please himself.

Leslie and Matt are both looking for answers and they will find them in different directions, but do they dare give their marriage, one more chance? What will Leslie do to win her husband back? Does she want him back? Will Matt’s desire lead him back to Leslie? These and other questions will sort themselves out, won’t they?

Ms. Claire Cross has written a quirky story about a couple’s trials and tribulations. I became immediately caught up in the drama of Matt’s departure and I could understand Leslie’s feelings of abandonment and confusion. Matt’s needing to assert himself is also understandable. The minor characters added flesh to the story, filling out the community of academia with its musty and complacent stuffed shirts and the nosy neighbor with her penchant for gossip.
