Dale Kinsall is forced to move from Ohio to Arizona for the sake of his health. His lungs were damaged in a fire in his clinic, and he is escaping from memories of that and a previous fire, as well as a climate that does not go well with his asthma.
Sully is a very intelligent beagle who is devoted to Dale and will follow him anywhere. Things do not always smell right here in Flagstaff, but it is home as long as Dale is there.
Flagstaff is suffering from its most severe drought in ages and its most puzzling series of bizarre murders. Dale Kinsall just hopes that the trouble has not followed him from Ohio, and that it will not prevent him from getting to know Laura better.
This murder mystery starts out very well and with a little bit of humor. Dale is a very likeable character and his co-workers in the clinic are very interestingly quirky. The receptionist and the kennel manager are both very much in charge and can be very funny. Laura starts out understandably annoyed that she was passed over for a man from out of state. My favorite character is Sully. The author really seems to know how a dog’s mind works and his perspective of things is what makes this book unique. Dale’s struggles with his asthma and the day-to-day operations of a busy veterinary clinic are very well described. The resolution of the mystery is more complicated than the reader will realize. You will think you have it all figured out and then find that you did not know everything. I also enjoyed the romance blossoming between Dale and Laura.
