Sarah Cartwright knew her father had a gambling problem but is surprised she was used to pay a debt with Teddy Wolfe. She is sick when Teddy informs her the evening was lovely and her father’s debt is paid. Afterwards, she overhears a conversation concerning Teddy then witnesses a murder.
Detective Cooper Bellamy with the Kansas City Police Department still has unresolved feelings for Sarah. After her life is threatened, he steps in offering protection. Seth Cartwright, Cooper’s partner, referred to often as Sarah’s evil twin, is trying to find criminating evidences against mob boss, Theodore Wolfe, unaware of Sarah’s danger.
Sarah tells Seth and Cooper about the murder. She is really glad to see Cooper, even though their relationship is not as solid as she would like. Three months later, Seth is upset things have gone afoul in bringing charges against Wolfe for money laundering. Sarah is troubled because she learns she is pregnant. There has been only one other person she slept with besides Cooper, and that night protection was used. Cooper is surprised to learn Sarah is pregnant with his child. He knows his cancer treatments killed any possibilities of producing children. Sarah is not convinced. It has to be Coopers. When Cooper learns about the one night her father used her to pay off a debt, he is shocked. He will be there for Sarah no matter what. When Sarah’s life is threatened Cooper will not let anyone harm her.
This story was a delight to read. I thought each of the characters were fabulous. I liked how Cooper was dedicated to his job and even to Sarah, but still had doubts about making a lasting relationship. It showed the human-side of him and not just the cop. I admired how Sarah wanted to take care of her family and tried to go that extra mile. She and Cooper make an adorable couple. Julie Miller weaves a romantic suspense that keeps the reader entertained. The plot with the baby was quite interesting surrounding Teddy and Cooper. I found Nine Month Protector a sensational read.
