Messages in the Lunchroom

Ms. Johnson, the truly evil sadistic teacher who has frequent lunchroom duty, gets her
comeuppance in this tale although several children suffer first.

Mushed

Jason is left with a horrible nanny when his parents must go care for his sick
grandmother. The nanny warns him repeatedly about the dangers of watching television,
so why did she turn on the set late at night?

Ashburger

Kyle always loved his great aunt, Tanith. She was everything his strict, health-nut parents
were not. When she dies at a hundred, she leaves her ashes in their care. The reasons
for that decision become clear when Kyle breaks a rule.

Missy Mage and the Mean Old Lady Down the Street

When Jayonna’s brother, Tyler, loses his favorite robot toy, Ace, into the yard of the
nasty woman down the street, he despairs of ever getting it back. Jayonna lends him her
doll, Missy Mage, for company that night. Mysterious, shocking events follow.

Cal and the Birthday Party

Cal fancies himself a very tough, masculine boy. He is required to attend the birthday
party of a dainty little girl he holds in contempt. After he wrecks the party, he is surprised
when she insists he take home a gift. However, it is not an ordinary toy.

The Parrot

Jake is tired of his nosy neighbor’s watchful eyes and her tendency to stop him from
doing things. But he loves the goodies she brings over. When she gets a parrot, her
attention turns to her new pet. He finds himself resenting the bird. It talks, so he slyly
teaches it some new naughty words.  The result shocks everyone.

The Overanxious Paddler

An overly strict father, George Miller, who was free with his use of a paddle on his two
children, Tina and Bobby, ends up alone and falls victim to his own excesses.

Stone Jimmy

Young Russell suffers cruelly at the hands of his older brother Lee. His peculiar aunt,
Olympia, held in contempt by his mother, offers him a way to make the torments cease.
He doubts the force of such magic, but finally decides to try it.

The Ghost of Jacob Abel

Confronted by a nasty ghost, one by one the family members faint dead away. It takes
the wisdom of a diapered babe to drive the spirit from the house.

Nine for the Nightlight is a delightfully horrific set of stories that the tweener set will find
very entertaining. Most are a bit too intense for younger children, but they are all well
done and both amusing and disgusting, which kids love. Ms. Perry certainly knows the
minds of children and writes to them well.
