Before her death, Rachel painted a portrait of the child she was never able to have and named her Nina. Through Elijah, an angel, Nina awakens. Like Pinocchio, she isn't truly alive, but instead has one year to decide whether she wants to face life or forever remain a painting.
After Rachel's passing, her best friend Anna buys the painting and learns the secret - Nina is real. Nina is saddened and confused about Rachel dying and leaving her. She is surprised to find that Anna is a friend she can count on and even though they argue that does not mean they are not still friends.
Unable to confide her concerns in Anna, Nina turns to Andrea, who helps her decide what to do without actually telling her to do it. Nina learns that love is like that. Along the way she learns how to love and live in the real world. She sees the world a bit different than her friends and it gives them a new perspective on life
Ms. DeJesus has an amazing way with words. To be honest I did not think I would like this book, because the main character is a painting, but Liz surprised me. This book is so full of wonderfully described scenery. How she makes me see the world just a little different is amazing. I feel as though I live with the characters, that I know them. I went through all the emotions the characters did, when they did, I wanted to hold their hand. Fantasy readers be prepared to be astounded by this fantastic book.
