Clyde Colby, former crime reporter for the Miami Herald, is now the host of a new cooking show. This episode will feature a very exclusive resort in Rattlesnake Key. While the chef is famous, the resort owner is a little creepy. All Clyde’s instincts tell her that something is wrong at this resort.
Sam McKenzie, stockbroker turned sailing instructor, also thinks that there is something fishy at the Far Horizons resort after a good friend dies during his stay there. The very attractive Ms. Colby is another good reason for him to hang around.
The Far Horizons Resort is very expensive and very exclusive. They refuse to hire locals, or use local suppliers. Locals call it the “Last Resort.” Several mysterious deaths have occurred there recently, two while Clyde is staying there for the filming of her show. When a young reporter Clyde has been helping is found beaten in a parking lot with a Star of David pinned to his chest, naturally the intrepid former reporter and her new love interest Sam carefully investigate the crime.
Ms. Board has written a thoroughly gripping mystery with memorable characters and a great plot. I loved the setting of a remote Florida Key, connected to the mainland only by a frequently malfunctioning drawbridge. Clyde is a very appealing character, spunky and very capable of solving any crime. Sam is a sexy foil for Clyde, just persistent enough to get past her walls. The supporting characters were so vividly written that the reader actually grieves a little when one dies. The local politicos are corrupt and do not even attempt to hide it. The climax is very exciting and a nail biter.
