Tara Delacruz is a criminal defense attorney just back to her home town after an out of town court case. She is smart and witty, but underneath it all she feels like an outsider. She does seem to have good reason of late. Since she has been home, people in her town seem to resent and blame her for the kidnappings happening in recent weeks.

Cord Smith was infected with strange bacteria back in the 1800s. The bacterium makes the person infected immortal. Cord has lived more then 100 years. These days he is the town mayor, a member of a popular local band, and a single parent raising a teen daughter. As the mayor, it is part of his job to help find out who has been kidnapping local high school drop outs and trying to murder them.

Cord strangely finds himself attracted to Tara. She seems to be everything that he has ever wanted. But with re-elections coming up he is worried how a relationship with Tara will affect his chances of re-election. Tara has been attracted to Cord from the first time she saw him. She would not mind being found in his bed. With all the strange goings on in town, they find themselves working together and unable to resist their common attraction.

I gave this book 2 cups because the story was choppy and a bit hard to follow. I found I was asking myself if I had missed some detail while reading. The character dialogue was a bit hard to believe. They had moments where, as the reader, I kept asking myself why that character would say something when it did not fit into the overall conversation. The storyline dragged and at times seemed to totally stray away from what I thought the story was about. It took almost 100 pages in before the story finally started moving in some sort of coherent direction.
