Theda Krakow is a freelance journalist trying to make her way in the world. She can be a little bit too curious at times, which often gets her in trouble. Having just lost her cat, writing a story that could get some community interest sounds like a good idea to her at the time. However, she has no idea what could happen to her if she pursues the story. Theda is in for quite a surprise especially since she does not want anything bad to happen to the cats that Lillian owned. She will have a fight on her hands and more questions than answers.
Bill Sherwin had a tough case ahead of him and Theda Krakow certainly was not helping. He did not want anyone else doing his job, but he knew she might be able to help him out so he gave her some information he probably should have kept to himself. He discovers there is more to Theda than he thought and he hopes they will be able to solve the crime before anyone else gets hurt.
Doing a community interest piece about a cat lady named Lillian is only the start of Theda’s problems. Finding the woman dead was not on her agenda, so she decides to find out what caused the death. She just cannot believe it was accidental. With the help of Violet, she hopes she can find out what is going on. There are a many things that they must consider; like Lillian's mentally unstable son and the rumors of a treasure hidden inside the house. Theda only hopes that they can figure things out quickly and no one else will get hurt. But, with not much time left, anything could happen and Theda needs to be on her toes.
Ms. Simon knows how to write a mystery that will keep a person guessing. I had no clue who had done it. Revelation of the murderer was a complete surprise to me and that made it all the more fun. Theda is a wonderful character that truly wants the best even though she is a little too curious at times. Violet is not a help but she wants to make sure all the cats are taken care of since Lillian is gone. This is the first book in the series and I cannot wait to read the rest of them. I hope and expect they will get better with each new story line presented. This is one book that kept me on the edge of my seat!
