Victor Carl, a defense attorney, represents people accused of crimes. He does not seem to be having a good night. Victor is surprised when he wakes and finds blood on him, his blood, with a stinging pain in his chest. When he opens his shirt he finds a tattoo on his chest with the name Chantal Adair. He cannot remember what happened the night before. He was sitting in a bar when a woman walked in and they started sharing small talk and drinks, and the next thing, he wakes with his clothes torn and this tattoo. He has no idea who Chantal Adair is or if she was someone that is of some importance in his life. It is all a mystery. He was already into a case, after his father urged him to go visit Zanita, as a personal favor.

Zanita Kalakos is dying and wishes Victor to find her son, Charles, who has been gone for fifteen years. Victor cannot understand why the authorities cannot locate Charles for Zanita. After all he is running from the law, someone has to know his whereabouts. Her son has been accused of extortion but fifteen years ago, when she put her house up for his bail, he disappeared. It does not matter that the FBI is searching, Zanita wishes Victor to find Charles and bring him home to say good-bye to her for the last time.

Victor finds himself struggling to learn the whereabouts of Charles, while trying to remember this tattoo business and Chantal, and something about a stolen Rembrandt being a bargaining tool. This is one situation that only grows more challenging by the minute and could find its way back to him in the worst way.

Marked Man is a deep story that has the reader spellbound. From the moment Victor wakes up with that tattoo, I was mesmerized with the whole turn of events. This well-written drama has all the right elements for a fabulous mystery. Victor is a driven character who pulls the reader instantly into his life and his work. I love the way he tries to connect the dots or find the missing links to the puzzle. William Lashner delivers his readers a suspenseful read loaded in dynamite action and intrigue. With a cleverly structured plot, he details an extraordinary unraveling of events that wow the reader.
