Tiana is a young African-American woman looking forward to spending time with her boyfriend, Bernard, and his family over the upcoming Christmas holiday.
Marcella is around the same age group as Tiana and of Mexican-American heritage; she is also a lesbian.
When Tiana finds the phone number for Bernard’s ex-girlfriend in his pants pocket, she knows he has been cheating on her. Tiana is furious and decides it is over between her and Bernard. At loose ends the next day and still feeling miserable, she goes to a local park where she meets Marcella. She shares her sad story, and Marcella commiserates and then takes her to her apartment. What happens between the two causes Tiana to view herself and her situation in a different light.
The author does a good job of showing how a woman who has been burned by a man might be persuaded to try a partner of her same sex when looking for love. I enjoyed reading about the gentle lovemaking between Tiana and Marcella. However, despite the explicit descriptions, it came off as more emotional than sexual with little heat between the two women. In spite of this, I look forward to opportunities to read more from this author.
