| LORDS OF VAR: THE SAVAGE KING MICHELLE M. PILLOW ISBN# 1-58608-369-4 March 2005 New Concept’s Publishing www.newconceptspublishing.com E-book $5.50 149 pages Futuristic Romance Rating: Agent Ulyssa Payne works for the Human Intelligence Agency. Her mission is to prevent the Medical Mafia from spreading biological weapons throughout the galaxy. After months on a mail-order bride ship with only women, she wants nothing more than a bath, a drink, and a man, in that order. First she must get off the planet, and in her way stands King Kirill, Ruler of the Vars, on the planet Qurilixen. Kirill is the king of a race of cat-men. Little does he know that before man’s death, he kidnapped a certain space traveler. When he first sees Ulyssa he is intrigued by her outspoken ways, so unlike the other women of his father’s harem. No matter how he tries to resist, he is unwillingly drawn to her even if it is against everything his taciturn father taught him and his brothers. Ulyssa finds herself a prisoner in the Var palace awaiting on a king who is never going to come. King Attar died and left her in a harem, much to her chagrin. Once she and Kirill meet, however, she is drawn to him immediately. When she inadvertently claims herself to be his woman, they are drawn into a relationship against their will. Together they must attempt to avert a global disaster. It sounds like a tall order and it is, but not too tall for a king and his very talented mistress. My heart broke at certain points of the story, my pulse raced at other parts. The love scenes between the two main characters were steamy to the extreme and not just the ones in the shower. Ulyssa is strong-willed without losing her innate femininity, and Kirill is one hot alpha male who just oozes sex appeal. This book was wonderful, beginning at Ulyssa’s laugh out loud inner rant to the very satisfying climax at the end. In between is a riveting story with vivid characters leaping off the page and into this reader’s heart. Thanks Ms. Pillow, I look forward to more of the Lords of Var.
