Pre Winningham came to Williamsburg to go to college, and never left. She is a single
woman who feels she must remain that way because God has another purpose for her.
Presently she co-manages a restaurant named Café Lisieux.

Larry Jeffries is a freelance reporter who is writing a story on Rosie, an elderly lady who
prays in protest outside the local abortion clinic and makes rosaries. Although Rosie
and her story fascinate him, he is personally intrigued by Pre. With Rosie’s help he is
determined to capture Pre’s heart.

There is turmoil in Williamsburg when one of the abortion doctors is murdered in his
home. A teenage girl is pregnant and faces the difficult decision of what to do about her
predicament. Through it all Pre, Rosie, and others hold onto their faith, trying to do what
they think the Lord would want.

Ms. Lively took a daring step by writing a book which deals so predominantly with such
a controversial subject as abortion. Although a writer’s bias usually comes through with
anything they write, Ms. Lively has presented both sides of this issue. It is easy to get
involved with the characters, to feel the confusion and fear that the pregnant teen feels -
or to feel the quiet sorrow of Rosie as she sits outside the clinic. There was a little
surprise near the end which left a happy ending for everyone.
