Cynthia Brightly has reached the end of her career in the Ton. She has no family and is penniless, now a scandal has ended her engagement and her standing with the people who matter.

Miles Redmond is a naturalist who studies insects. The second son of the wealthy Redmond family, his only concern is getting funding for his next expedition, that is, until his elder brother's disappearance. His family now expects him to get married to a suitable heiress.

Fleeing a scandal and penury, Cynthia has one last chance to make a viable marriage before being forced into a career as a companion to an irascible old invalid in the North. The Redmond's house party has several possibilities and the studious Miles is willing to help her for a price. Now the eldest, he is more interesting now than he was when she was at the height of her popularity, but he is destined for another.

This is a story of two very passionate individuals determined to go their own way, until love strikes them. Miles is a very worldly scholar with a possible wife and mistress at the house party in addition to Cynthia. Cynthia does her best not to appear desperate and only Miles knows how bad her situation is. Their story heats up quickly and it is obvious that they are meant to be together despite their ambitions. The subplot of Miles' restless sister Violet is very interesting and I kept wondering what actually happened to Lyon. The author captures the period and its people well and little Spider the kitten is adorable. The love scenes are very well written as are the characters themselves. I lost myself in the story quickly and was sorry when it ended.
