Emma Collingwood’s novel, Lieutenant Samuel Blackwood (deceased), is a tale that takes place on the high seas upon the decks of a cursed ship, the HMS Privet. Lieutenant Daniel Leigh volunteers for the job of First Lieutenant which puts him in mortal danger, for upon this ship the position means certain death. He does not know that he will not only end up fighting for his life but the life of his shipmates and the man he comes to love, Captain John Meadows.
Daniel Leigh is a young sailor injured at sea and confined to desk duties at the request of his mother, by his father who is an Admiral. A meeting with one of his friends who has been commissioned to the cursed ship intrigues Daniel and he volunteers himself instead, determined to solve the mystery. He takes command of the ship and from the crew learns many secrets about the original lieutenant who died and whom Daniel comes to believe is haunting not only the ship but the Captain.
The story, written in the style of the Victorian “Penny Dreadful,” moves along quickly, sweeping you up in the tale of power, love and death. It includes four original etchings in keeping with the style of the book that accurately depict happenings in the book. In keeping with an era where homosexuality could lead to the gallows, Ms. Collingwood still manages to convey the strong feelings the Captain and our hero have for each other.
Lieutenant Samuel Blackwood (deceased) is a rollicking tale that was entertaining to read. I thoroughly enjoyed this story. I look forward to more of these Penny Dreadfuls from Ms. Collingwood, especially as they are not dreadful at all.
Caution: This title contains m/m romance, supernatural themes and red-hot romance
