The white picket fence, loving husband, and 2.5 kids are everything Maggie Donnely ever wanted, and exactly the opposite of what she got. Her ex-husband Ted is a drag queen, her house a tiny apartment above her business, and as for children, uhmm.
Stepping into that cooking school and seeing Maggie for the first time nearly brought Kevin Best to his knees. He could see his future with her in the forefront, but now that she hates the very air he breathes, that future is looking more and more distant.
Could life get any worse? Yes, yes it can. Maggie seems to go from stepping into one disaster after another, and who is always there to see her crumble, none other than her sworn enemy, Kevin Best. Her business is listing dangerously in the red, and now her ex-partner is showing up on her doorstep with frightening regularity. To top it off, she is fighting a losing battle with her emotions, but one thing is certain. Kevin Best has no place in her life, does he?
I do not believe I have ever read a story where the main character is so appallingly shameful. Maggie’s actions as well as her words are spiteful and immature, and despite the outcome, I could not bring myself to find her at all appealing. On the other hand, Kevin and her friends are completely the opposite, making me wonder why the author paints her in such a bad light. Seriously, I was blown away by how awful she treats Kevin, and how many times he comes back for more—masochistic maybe?
