Firoozeh Dumas is the product of many cultural backgrounds. Her life began in the beautiful town of Abadan in Iran. Her Iranian parents gifted her and her brothers with excellent educations, a wonderful family structure, and unparalleled cultural experiences.

Firoozeh and her family moved many times in the course of her father’s career. First they left the small town of Abadan, and moved to the city of Tehran, where everything moved at the speed of light. This was a major shock for Firoozeh, who had always enjoyed the outdoors, and especially her family’s back yard garden. Now she was stuck in an apartment building with no garden in sight, but plenty of nosy neighbors and non-stop traffic. They were eventually sent to California, and became the interesting, if not a bit odd, foreign family on the block. While living the All-American Dream, Firoozeh went to UC Berkeley, married a Frenchman, and is now in the process of raising her children. At the age of 36, Firoozeh found her calling, writing. Her family is a fantastic resource for her writing, filling the pages of her book with humor, love, and a healthy respect for their heritage.

This had me laughing out loud from one chapter to the next. My husband even asked me to leave the room when I became louder than ESPN (Is that even possible?). Firoozeh Dumas relates her stories with humor and intelligence. Everyone, regardless of their nationality or cultural background will be enlightened by her story telling. She truly brings an Iranian family to life, and I believe we can all benefit from reading her story. Every country on this planet has its own uniquely wonderful people and cultures, and Firoozeh embraces these differences with a zeal we should all try to emulate.
