Brian Donovan has been very successful at many things, including his career and his wealth. He soon finds himself in a position to represent the United States and travel to the small European country of Eisengau to see the new weapon they have invented. He never intended to find the love of his life.

Meredith Duncan is everything a proper lady is not. She is very much the opposite and when her mother and stepfather try to marry her off to a man who abused his first wife, she propositions Brian to ruin her reputation to get out of it.

Although each finds themselves attracted the other, Brian wants to convince Meredith they belong together. She does not believe in marriage and bending to a man’s rule. If they are to be together, Brian must find a way to keep her safe because things are not as they should be in Eisengau.

This is an entertaining read written by Ms. Whiteside. I have not read the others in the series, but I feel that each must stand alone as I had no problem understanding the storyline. I enjoyed Meredith and Brian as a couple, both unlikely yet predictable. I did however feel myself not always in the same timeline as the story; some things made it feel a bit too modern. But not enough to affect my opinion of the story. I would recommend you try it for yourself.
