Lily has always been unable to settle down in one place. The daughter of a mostly absent travel writer and a workaholic innkeeper, she has never really known a stable home. Her career as a wilderness firefighter was perfect for her until a freak accident ended her career, and almost her life. She goes back to her first job as a nature guide to prove to herself and everyone else that she has control of her life.

Jared is a computer genius and a workaholic. His unhealthy lifestyle proceeded unchecked until he was diagnosed with cancer. While facing death, he realized that life was passing him by. So, he made a list of all the things he wanted to do to change his life. This hiking trip into nature is the first step.

Two people recovering from near death experiences meet and fall in love in the Sierras during a hiking trip. Jared is determined to continue their association after the trip is over, but Lily’s fear of commitment makes his goal difficult. He only has a few days to convince her, but she has her hands full with a group of inept campers.

This is a well-written and engrossing book. The setting is just beautifully described; I could almost picture the mountains and lakes. The characters are very well defined and the reader will feel like they know each and every one of them by the end of the story. Jared and Lily are likeable people who have survived and flourished beyond medical expectations, but the author is never overly saccharine about their problems.
