Jessie Belle Holt always gets what she wants, even at the expense of other people. She learned from her mother and took her lessons seriously. Traynor Devereux might be just the person to take her away from small town life, although her manipulative ways may finally make her get on her knees and pray for help. Hopefully it will be sooner rather than later because the places she is going to now may be a bit over her head.
Traynor Devereux is a man of God. He loves being a pastor and eventually hopes to find someone with whom to share his life. Jessie seems to be that person and he refuses to listen to any gossip about her. He trusts God to help him through things no matter what people say. Sometimes he wonders if there might be more to the gossip, but with no real proof, Traynor will rely on God's directions.
Wooed by the riches she finds in the city, Jessie wants more than she has ever had before. She learns that her husband does not mind living a simple life, and that is driving her up the wall. Nothing is out of bounds for her and that means she will do anything; blackmail, lie, cheat, and even use her body to get what she thinks is important. Yet she only hinders the achievement of her goal and brings on a personal hell that she may not be able to escape. Only time will tell whether she can keep things wrapped up tight or if they will unravel at her feet.
Edgy and full of emotions are the two best words to describe this book. Jezebel presents the story of Jezebel that most people can understand today. I am immensely impressed with how well Ms. Thomas tackled this issue and kept it interesting. Having an idea that things would fall apart never took away from how the pieces fit into place. Wondering which lie would trip up Jessie Belle is one more thing that kept me turning the pages. I kept hoping that she would finally work things out, but it was only a matter of when. I am pleased with this author and definitely want to look into more of her work. This is a book that is very easy to relate to and may touch some hearts to think about what they are doing.
