Nika Jacks is a lieutenant in her local fire department, but she has always wanted to be a smoke jumper. She has finally been accepted for a tryout and cannot wait to let them know what she is made of.
J.T. Riley is not what he seems. Working with the convict crew during wild fire season, he falls for Nika at first sight. He has to keep her safe.
Nika's trials, and the hot shot school trainers’ discriminations against her, only seem to make her stronger and more determined. Her fellow rookies are so well described I felt like I knew them all. Nika fights for her place in the prestigious fire service and makes the cut only to have a mysterious secret admirer threaten everything she has worked for. The mystery man could be anyone from her repentant ex-husband, one of her fellow rookies, or the man in the convict crew she is so drawn to.
This is one story that will hook you on the first page and not let go until the end. Nika is a great character, a woman in a mostly male profession striving for the top. I found myself angry with the discrimination, a sign of some really good writing. The plot kept me in suspense, I never figured out the secret admirer until the end, some really good red herrings here. The subplot of the missing gold was also intriguing, but the best part was J.T. and Nika’s bumpy romance. If their jobs were not getting in the way, Nika’s ex, Scott, was. Scott was a surprisingly sympathetic character, despite his treatment of Nika in the past. The background of the fire service training school was really well done and enhanced the story. I will definitely be reading this one again.
