Ellie Hastings has continued to visit Hummingbird Falls ever since the death of her husband, ten years ago. During the summers, she takes a break from her teaching, and enjoys the solace the area offers while working on her poetry and paintings.

Chief David Shaffer grew up in Hummingbird Falls. When an unrecognizable body is discovered dead, he pulls all the plugs to find the killer.

Ellie met Alice at the gallery when she was selling some paintings and immediately formed a bond with her. When her other friend, Josie, who is a bit loose in the head, insists their friend, Alice, is dead, Ellie is skeptical. Josie says she is aware of who killed her, and fears she is being watched. She does not want Ellie to phone the police. Ellie tries phoning Alice only to get her answering machine. Colby Conners, another policeman who serves under Dave, calls to check on Alice, and the other women in the area, to make sure they are okay. Ellie knows Josie acts a bit weird but she is far from suicidal when Colby begins asking about her. Some believe Alice’s death involves the return of her brother after thirteen years. After death befalls Josie, Ellie wonders if she could be next as she joins David in the investigation.

Hummingbird Falls is the beginning of a great series. I fell in love with the town, the people and the whole atmosphere that is sketched. Joanne Clarey allows this reader to visualize the setting and the love that shines among many of the town’s citizens. She crafts a believable read, making me want to jump inside the pages and visit everyone. I was completely mesmerized with the investigation as well as with Ellie and David as they work together. All the secondary characters enhance the story and add just the right amount of tang to make this mystery a wonderful read. Join the search for a killer in Hummingbird Falls, where every turn of the page keeps the reader captivated.
