Susie is a district nurse and a Pilates instructor on a remote Australian island. She left the island once, fell in love, and was deserted pregnant with twins. She has not left the island since.

Sam is an orthopedic surgeon and the twin brother of the man who left Susie pregnant. His trip to her island home is part curiosity and part responsibility, but his feelings rapidly change once he meets Susie.

Over eight years ago, Susie fell in love with a handsome but irresponsible doctor who promised her marriage. Grant’s world revolved around Grant, and until he was faced with death, he took no responsibility for the lives he changed forever. He left an insurance settlement to the mother of his twin sons. As usual, the responsible twin Sam is delegated to clean up his brother’s mess, but the proud and self-sufficient Susie and her well-adjusted children are no mess, but a blessing, and just what Sam needs in his life.

I enjoyed this story. The setting of a remote island peopled with feisty retirees is a unique one. The inhabitants of the island are colorful and opinionated, and Susie and her children are the heart of the community. I felt sorry for Sam, having a sociopath as a twin could not be easy, and even the aunt who raised them seems to favor Grant a bit, if only out of guilt. Their love story happens very quickly and Susie is rightly suspicious. The subplot of the wrecked bridge is a key portion of the story. This is an enjoyable read with likable characters, a great setting, and a very readable plot. I’d like to retire to that island myself to see Dr. Effie the astrologer.
