Alex has just about hit bottom. She is sleeping on the floor of a friend of a friend’s apartment, pregnant, and barely surviving on her wages as a waitress in a bar. She has no idea what she will do when her pregnancy becomes more noticeable and she cannot spend hours on her feet.
Connor is on the verge of losing everything that his family has worked for over the last hundred years. His only chance is to access his trust fund. To do that he has to get married, and fast.
When Alex faints in front of Connor, common courtesy demands that he assist her and see that she is all right. Neither imagines that less than a month later they would be married, albeit in name only. But for how long? Alex has a great deal of spunk. Caring for herself since her parent’s deaths, she depends on no one. Connor is very similar. It is hard for each to ask for help, yet they come to rely on each other even if they cannot tell each other of their real feelings.
The misunderstandings make this story more interesting, and Connor’s grandmother is a very vivid character who really makes the story much deeper. The background of what seems to be a recent mad cow scare really adds urgency to Connor’s plight. The author does a good job of bringing their situation to a climax without a great deal of melodrama.
