Caitrina Lamont is the spoiled and petted princess of her family. She is loyal to those she loves and much stronger than anyone knows. She is outspoken and has a temper.
Jamie Campbell is a military man in the service of his cousin, the notorious Earl of Argyll. He is honorable and loyal to his family and is determined to see order restored to the highlands. His family and the Lamonts have been feuding for some time.
During one of Scotland’s most tumultuous eras, a man and a woman from opposing families fall in love, but family loyalties and secrets threaten to destroy their romance. When Caitrina’s home and family are destroyed, she is forced to turn to a member of the family that ruined them. Caitrina and Jamie are both too opinionated for an easy marriage, but passion is there aplenty.
This is an exciting and involving story. Caitrina and Jamie are both very vivid characters with all the faults and prejudices that were prevalent at the time. The author’s descriptions of the characters and settings are wonderful and the plot is riveting. There is quite a bit of violence in the story, but this is a very violent time in Scotland’s history. I especially loved Caitrina. She starts out a spoiled and pampered little girl and grows up quickly through adversity. Jamie is a little too rigid, and almost loses everything because of it and his less than wonderful family, but learns to bend when he must. I cannot wait for the rest of the trilogy.
