Antoinette DuPre is a considerable heiress, along with her sister. Orphaned at an early age, they are targets for fortune hunters, but lead a quiet life in the country.

Gabriel Langley has been robbed of the inheritance promised to him by his grandfather. He does not know who he blames more; his father or Lord Appleby, the man who has stolen his future.

Lord Appleby is, on the surface, a successful and respectable man. He is neither. After luring Antoinette to the City to see the Great Exhibition, Lord Appleby is determined to marry her for her fortune. Antionette is resistant, so he kidnaps her, taking her to the estate he stole from Gabriel. Gabriel‘s only way to get his manor back is to steal a letter from Antoinette and give it to Appleby. Disguised as a highwayman, Gabriel attacks her coach and searches Antoinette just a little too thoroughly. They are not the only ones threatened by the greedy lord’s plots.

This is a well-written love story with an intricate plot and vivid characters. The love story between the two main characters is well done, as are the subplots of the mysterious asylum and Aphrodite’s club. The kidnapping was a little hard to believe, especially when she was allowed to ride unaccompanied. Lord Appleby was less threatening than he should have been; I never really got any feeling of menace from him. The fantasy-prone maid was an interesting character who added twists of her own to the story. Overall, this is a very readable historical romance based in a period of great change in England. Gabriel and Antoinette are strong characters who take charge of their own destiny, with a little help from their friends.
