Lizbeth Ives is the daughter of the most feared man in London; the Lord High Executioner. Since the position is passed down in the family and she is the only Ives left, she will never marry. Her sympathy for the prisoners of the Crown is legendary.
Broderick Maxwell is the second son of Laird Maxwell of the Border Marches. Resigned that his unappreciative brother Aiden will inherit his father’s lands and marry the beautiful and wealthy Lady Juliana, he serves his brother, until Aiden’s actions land them in the Tower of London.
Lizbeth, in running away from the horrid Chief Warder, Lord Hollister, runs to her father, who is in the process of whipping two Scots. Somehow she ends up escaping with the surviving Scot, who promises to take her and the incriminating evidence she holds to the Duke of Gloucester, in Yorkshire on his way home.
I really enjoyed this well-written medieval era romance. It is set in a turbulent era at the end of Edward IV’s reign and the gossip and rumor of the time provide lots of drama for the plot. Lizbeth is a brave character who tries to overcome some very valid fears gained from years of abuse by Lord Hollister. Broc has spent his life trying to suppress envy of his less worthy older brother, only to find himself Laird when Aiden’s womanizing lands them in the Tower and Aiden does not survive. Their flight to Yorkshire and then Scotland is very exciting with some very good love scenes. Broc always thought he was in love with his brother’s fiancée, but Lizbeth takes her place in his heart quickly. The other characters are very colorful, especially Broc’s mother and grandmother. Both the love story and action scenes are wonderful. The author captures the spirit of the time with both story and wonderfully vivid characters.
